When you are a leukemia patient, the world around you changes a lot. You will find yourself befriending lot of patients and will hear a lot of amazing stories. In a world where names are irrelevant, one of those stories I heard was of her. She is of my age and till recently, used to live right next door. I heard her story in bits and pieces from narratives of her mother, sister and at times, from herself. From what I could gather, she is practically the complete opposite of who I am. Hardworking, God fearing, socially conscious and above all, highly scholarly. In my short life so far, of 25 years, most of which I spent in Kerala, I am yet to see a woman who does not fear the opinion of others. May be the world is supposed to be so and manipulators and tricksters like me are an exemption.

Anyway, in Tamil Nadu, it seems they are having a calm and quiet summer. I never liked the change of seasons although I knew they were inevitable. Just like changing the place of your operation. For the last few years, I had bases in many different places. However, leukemia made Vellore my base for the last 8 months. I was admitted on the 7\textsuperscript{th} of October last year. So now it has been exactly 8 months. I did see different lives and people during these days, all of them nurses, doctors, patients and relatives. May be a very few other hospital staff too. Many know me by my masked appearance by now, and in turn I know many of them too. The friend circle did grow and I should say I have some good friends among them. From nurses who come from OPD, to those in wards and doctors who are PG registrars to consultants and department heads. I do turn many heads because of a simple reason. When I get admitted, I usually go there with a laptop and most of the times, many see books as niche or weird. @@ -1,5 +1,5 @@ \begin{english} -\secstar{Hospital Log 8} +\section*{Hospital Log 8} \vskip 2pt It has been quite long since I wrote anything. The stay at hospital this time is not allowing me to have a lot of time to write and even note down my hospital experiences. To give the minimum details, I got admitted for my Bone Marrow Transplant on June 15\textsuperscript{th}. On 16\textsuperscript{th}, they put line, then shifted me to the Stem Cell Transplant Unit, an isolation ward for BMT patients. Then for 2 days, I got heavy chemotherapy and the next 3 days Total Body Irradiation. TBI was given in two sessions for 3 days. After that on 23\textsuperscript{rd}, they transplanted or transfused the graft cells. So far so good. It was so for some more days, then effects of TBI started to show up. By the way, after chemo and TBI, I practically had no immunity system. To top it, I took kind of a risk with going for BMT with an unhealed chest infect (which is still there as residues). |
