<title>Using the Accessibility Preference Tools</title>

<title>Opening an Accessibility Tool</title>
<para>You can open an <guilabel>Accessibility</guilabel> preference tool in
the following ways: </para>

<listitem><para>From the <guisubmenu>Desktop Preferences</guisubmenu> menu

<para>Choose <menuchoice><guimenu>Applications</guimenu><guisubmenu>
Desktop Preferences</guisubmenu><guisubmenu>Accessibility</guisubmenu>
</menuchoice>. Choose the preference tool that you require from the submenu.
The dialog for the tool is displayed.</para></listitem>
<listitem><para>From the <guilabel>Start Here</guilabel> location</para>
<para>Open a <application>Nautilus</application> window, then choose <menuchoice>
<guimenu>Go</guimenu><guimenuitem>Start Here</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.
Alternatively, double-click on the <guilabel>Start Here</guilabel> object
on the desktop background. The <guilabel>Start Here</guilabel> location is
displayed. Double-click on the <guilabel>Preferences</guilabel> object in
the <application>Nautilus</application> window, then double-click on the <guilabel>
Accessibility</guilabel> folder. The following figure shows the <guilabel>
Accessibility</guilabel> folder:</para>

<title>Configuring Keyboard Accessibility Options</title>

<para>Use the <application>Keyboard Accessibility</application> preference
tool <indexterm><primary>preference tools</primary><secondary>Keyboard Accessibility
</secondary></indexterm>to set the keyboard and miscellaneous accessibility
preferences.</para>
<para>The <application>Keyboard Accessibility</application> preference tool
is also known as <application>AccessX</application>.</para>

to specify the interval to wait after the first keypress before the automatic
repeat of a pressed key. Setting range: 10 to 900 milliseconds. </para></listitem>
<listitem><para><guilabel>Beep when key is rejected</guilabel>: Select this
option for an audible indication of key rejection. </para></listitem>

<entry colname="COLSPEC1"><para>Select this option to make the numeric keypad
on your keyboard emulate mouse actions. You can specify the following mouse
key settings: </para><itemizedlist>
<listitem><para><guilabel>Maximum pointer speed</guilabel>: Use this setting
to specify the maximum speed that the pointer moves across the screen. Setting
range: 1 to 100 pixels per second. </para></listitem>
<listitem><para><guilabel>Time to accelerate to maximum speed</guilabel>:
Use this setting to specify the duration of the acceleration time of the pointer.
 Setting range: 10 to 5000 milliseconds.   </para></listitem>
<listitem><para><guilabel>Start moving this long after keypress</guilabel>:
Use this setting to specify the period of time that must pass after a keypress
before the pointer moves. Setting range: 10 to 5000 milliseconds. </para>

<entry colname="COLSPEC1"><para>The test area is an interactive interface
so you can see how the keyboard settings affect the display as you type. Type
text in the test area to test the effect of your settings.</para></entry>

of time that you must press and hold a key before acceptance. You can specify
the following slow keys settings: </para><itemizedlist>
<listitem><para><guilabel>Only accept keypress after</guilabel>: Use this
setting to specify the period of time that you must press and hold a key before
acceptance. Setting range: 10 and 900 milliseconds. </para></listitem>
<listitem><para><guilabel>Beep when key is pressed</guilabel>: Select this
option for an audible indication of a keypress. </para></listitem>
<listitem><para><guilabel>Beep when key is accepted</guilabel>: Select this
option for an audible indication of key acceptance. </para></listitem>
<listitem><para><guilabel>Beep when key is rejected</guilabel>: Select this
option for an audible indication of key rejection. </para></listitem>

keypress  operations by pressing the keys in sequence. You can specify the
following sticky keys settings: </para><itemizedlist>
<listitem><para><guilabel>Beep when modifier is pressed</guilabel>: Select
this option for an audible indication when you press a modifier key. </para>
</listitem>
<listitem><para><guilabel>Turn off Sticky Keys when two pressed simultaneously</guilabel>: Select this option to specify when you press two keys simultaneously,
you can no longer press keys in sequence to perform multiple simultaneous
keypresses.</para></listitem>

<title>Miscellaneous Accessibility Options</title>
<para>Use the <application>Keyboard Accessibility</application> preference
tool to set your general accessibility preferences.</para>
<para>You can change some session-level accessibility options in the <guilabel>
Misc</guilabel> tabbed section of the <application>Keyboard Accessibility
</application> dialog.</para>
