* rcu: fix bug in rcutorture system-shutdown codePaul E. McKenney2009-01-071-45/+68
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch fixes an rcutorture bug found by Eric Sesterhenn that resulted in oopses in response to "rmmod rcutorture". The problem was in some new code that attempted to handle the case where a system is shut down while rcutorture is still running, for example, when rcutorture is built into the kernel so that it cannot be removed. The fix causes the rcutorture threads to "park" in an schedule_timeout_uninterruptible(MAX_SCHEDULE_TIMEOUT) rather than trying to get them to terminate cleanly. Concurrent shutdown and rmmod is illegal. I believe that this is 2.6.29 material, as it is used in some testing setups. For reference, here are the rcutorture operating modes: CONFIG_RCU_TORTURE_TEST=m This is the normal rcutorture build. Use "modprobe rcutorture" (with optional arguments) to start, and "rmmod rcutorture" to stop. If you shut the system down without doing the rmmod, you should see console output like: rcutorture thread rcu_torture_writer parking due to system shutdown One for each rcutorture kthread. CONFIG_RCU_TORTURE_TEST=y CONFIG_RCU_TORTURE_TEST_RUNNABLE=n Use this if you want rcutorture built in, but don't want the test to start running during early boot. To start the torturing: echo 1 > /proc/sys/kernel/rcutorture_runnable To stop the torturing, s/1/0/ You will get "parking" console messages as noted above when you shut the system down. CONFIG_RCU_TORTURE_TEST=y CONFIG_RCU_TORTURE_TEST_RUNNABLE=y Same as above, except that the torturing starts during early boot. Only for the stout of heart and strong of stomach. The same /proc entry noted above may be used to control the test. Located-by: Eric Sesterhenn <snakebyte@gmx.de> Tested-by: Eric Sesterhenn <snakebyte@gmx.de> Signed-off-by: Paul E. * cpumask: convert RCU implementationsRusty Russell2009-01-011-12/+15
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Impact: use new cpumask API. rcu_ctrlblk contains a cpumask, and it's highly optimized so I don't want a cpumask_var_t (ie. a pointer) for the CONFIG_CPUMASK_OFFSTACK case. It could use a dangling bitmap, and be allocated in __rcu_init to save memory, but for the moment we use a bitmap. (Eventually 'struct cpumask' will be undefined for CONFIG_CPUMASK_OFFSTACK, so we use a bitmap here to show we really mean it). We remove on-stack cpumasks, using cpumask_var_t for rcu_torture_shuffle_tasks() and for_each_cpu_and in force_quiescent_state(). Signed-off-by: Rusty Russell <rusty@rustcorp.com.au>
* rcu: fix rcutorture behavior during rebootPaul E. McKenney2008-12-171-10/+56
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Impact: fix very rare reboot hang Because rcutorture ignored all signals, it does not terminate in response to the signals sent at shutdown time. This can cause strange failures due to its continuing to make use of kernel function too late in the shutdown sequence. This patch therefore adds a shutdown notifier to rcutorture, causing it to shut down in response to a reboot or an orderly shutdown. Signed-off-by: Paul E. * rcu: make rcutorture even more vicious: invoke RCU readers from irq handlers ↵Paul E. McKenney2008-06-261-4/+70
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | (timers) This patch allows torturing RCU from irq handlers (timers, in this case). A new module parameter irqreader enables such additional torturing, and is enabled by default. Variants of RCU that do not tolerate readers being called from irq handlers (e.g., SRCU) ignore irqreader. Signed-off-by: Paul E. * rcu: make rcutorture more vicious: reinstate boot-time testingPaul E. McKenney2008-06-191-1/+8
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch re-institutes the ability to build rcutorture directly into the Linux kernel. The reason that this capability was removed was that this could result in your kernel being pretty much useless, as rcutorture would be running starting from early boot. This problem has been avoided by (1) making rcutorture run only three seconds of every six by default, (2) adding a CONFIG_RCU_TORTURE_TEST_RUNNABLE that permits rcutorture to be quiesced at boot time, and (3) adding a sysctl in /proc named /proc/sys/kernel/rcutorture_runnable that permits rcutorture to be quiesced and unquiesced when built into the kernel. Please note that this /proc file is -not- available when rcutorture is built as a module. Please also note that to get the earlier take-no-prisoners behavior, you must use the boot command line to set rcutorture's "stutter" parameter to zero. The rcutorture quiescing mechanism is currently quite crude: loops in each rcutorture process that poll a global variable once per tick. Suggestions for improvement are welcome. The default action will be to reduce the polling rate to a few times per second. Signed-off-by: Paul E. * rcu: make rcutorture more vicious: add stutter featurePaul E. McKenney2008-06-181-3/+56
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch takes a step towards making rcutorture more brutal by allowing the test to be automatically periodically paused, with the default being to run the test for five seconds then pause for five seconds and repeat. This behavior can be controlled using a new "stutter" module parameter, so that "stutter=0" gives the old default behavior of running continuously. Starting and stopping rcutorture more heavily stresses RCU's interaction with the scheduler, as well as exercising more paths through the grace-period detection code. Note that the default to "shuffle_interval" has also been adjusted from 5 seconds to 3 seconds to provide varying overlap with the "stutter" interval. I am still unable to provoke the failures that Alexey has been seeing, even with this patch, but will be doing a few additional things to beef up rcutorture. * cpu-hotplug: replace lock_cpu_hotplug() with get_online_cpus()Gautham R Shenoy2008-01-251-3/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Replace all lock_cpu_hotplug/unlock_cpu_hotplug from the kernel and use get_online_cpus and put_online_cpus instead as it highlights the refcount semantics in these operations. The new API guarantees protection against the cpu-hotplug operation, but it doesn't guarantee serialized access to any of the local data structures. Hence the changes needs to be reviewed. In case of pseries_add_processor/pseries_remove_processor, use cpu_maps_update_begin()/cpu_maps_update_done() as we're modifying the cpu_present_map there. * Make rcutorture RNG use temporal entropyPaul E. McKenney2007-10-171-6/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Repost of http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/8/10/472 made available by request. The locking used by get_random_bytes() can conflict with the preempt_disable() and synchronize_sched() form of RCU. This patch changes rcutorture's RNG to gather entropy from the new cpu_clock() interface (relying on interrupts, preemption, daemons, and rcutorture's reader thread's rock-bottom scheduling priority to provide useful entropy), and also adds and EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL() to make that interface available to GPLed kernel modules such as rcutorture. Passes several hours of rcutorture. [ego@in.ibm.com: Use raw_smp_processor_id() in rcu_random()] Signed-off-by: Paul E. * Freezer: make kernel threads nonfreezable by defaultRafael J. Wysocki2007-07-171-3/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently, the freezer treats all tasks as freezable, except for the kernel threads that explicitly set the PF_NOFREEZE flag for themselves. This approach is problematic, since it requires every kernel thread to either set PF_NOFREEZE explicitly, or call try_to_freeze(), even if it doesn't care for the freezing of tasks at all. It seems better to only require the kernel threads that want to or need to be frozen to use some freezer-related code and to remove any freezer-related code from the other (nonfreezable) kernel threads, which is done in this patch. The patch causes all kernel threads to be nonfreezable by default (ie. to have PF_NOFREEZE set by default) and introduces the set_freezable() function that should be called by the freezable kernel threads in order to unset PF_NOFREEZE. It also makes all of the currently freezable kernel threads call set_freezable(), so it shouldn't cause any (intentional) change of behaviour to appear. Additionally, it updates documentation to describe the freezing of tasks more accurately. [akpm@linux-foundation.org: build fixes] Signed-off-by: Rafael J. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | rcu_random uses a counter rrs_count to occasionally mix data from get_random_bytes into the state of its pseudorandom generator. | | | | | | | | | Add operations for the call_rcu_bh() variant of RCU. Also add an rcu_batches_completed_bh() function, which is needed by rcutorture. Signed-off-by: Paul E. McKenney <paulmck@us.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
* [PATCH] rcutorture: add ops vector and Classic RCU opsPaul E. McKenney2006-06-271-43/+120
| | | | | | | | | Add an ops vector to rcutorture, and add the ops for Classic RCU. Update the rcutorture documentation to reflect slight change to the dmesg formats. Signed-off-by: Paul E. * [PATCH] rcutorture: catchup doc fixes for idle-hz testsPaul E. McKenney2006-06-271-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | This just catches the RCU torture documentation up with the recent fixes that test RCU for architectures that turn of the scheduling-clock interrupt for idle CPUs and the addition of a SUCCESS/FAILURE indication, fixing up an obsolete comment as well. * [PATCH] Remove MODULE_PARMRusty Russell2006-03-251-5/+5
| | | | | | | | | | MODULE_PARM was actually breaking: recent gcc version optimize them out as unused. It's time to replace the last users, which are generally in the most unloved drivers anyway. * [PATCH] rcutorture: tag success/failure line with module parametersPaul E. McKenney2006-03-241-8/+15
| | | | | | | | | | | | A long-running rcutorture test can overflow dmesg, so that the line containing the module parameters is lost. Although it is usually possible to retrieve this information from the log files, it is much better to just tag it onto the final success/failure line so that it may be easily found. This patch does just that. Signed-off-by: "Paul E. McKenney" <paulmck@us.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
* [PATCH] rcu_torture_lock deadlock fixIngo Molnar2006-01-311-5/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | rcu_torture_lock is used in a softirq-unsafe manner, but it is also taken by rcu_torture_cb(), which may execute in softirq-context, resulting in potential deadlocks. The fix is to acquire rcu_torture_lock in a softirq-safe manner. With this fix applied, the rcu-torture code passes validation. Signed-off-by: Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu> Acked-by: Paul E. * [PATCH] Extend RCU torture module to test tickless idle CPUSrivatsa Vaddagiri2006-01-081-5/+91
| | | | | | | | | | | | This patch forces RCU torture threads off various CPUs in the system allowing them to become idle and go tickless. Meant to test support for such tickless idle CPU in RCU. * [PATCH] Fix bug in RCU torture testSrivatsa Vaddagiri2005-12-121-2/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | While doing some test of RCU torture module, I hit a OOPS in rcu_do_batch, which was trying to processes callback of a module that was just removed. This is because we weren't waiting long enough for all callbacks to fire. Signed-off-by: Srivatsa Vaddagiri <vatsa@in.ibm.com> Cc: Dipankar Sarma <dipankar@in.ibm.com> Acked-by: "Paul E. * [PATCH] add success/failure indication to RCU torture testPaul E. McKenney2005-11-181-6/+24
| | | | | | | | | | | | | One issue with the RCU torture test is that the current error flagging can be lost in dmesg. This patch adds a "SUCCESS"/"FAILURE" string to the line that flags the end of the test, where it can easily be seen with "dmesg | tail" at the end of the test. Also adds tests of architecture-specific memory barriers -- or, more likely, of the RCU torture test itself. Cc: <vatsa@in.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: "Paul E.
